How can I have faith in God?

Situation: half of my family is religious and half isn't. I always said since I was a child that I was agnostic because that's what my dad said and I felt confused about the topic of religion. I still found myself praying, I am not sure if to God or the Universe but I found myself praying for things. It is as if somehow I feel his energy around me and I feel like something protects me. All I am looking is for your advice, I want to believe and not just to believe that I might believe.
