Early Sumerian society had a lot in common with our society today. One of these things is the social structures. Sumerian society was a caste system with a small oligarchy of powerful people at the top, and a large group of common labors below them. They had a tax system that the oligarchs on the top used to increase their power, and the class distinctions below the oligarchs often depended on the level of education they had. Children of educated Sumerians often got great educations and maintained their status on the social scale, and children of uneducated Sumerians were also uneducated and remained at the bottom of the caste. The Sumerians also had one of the earliest democracies in human history, but ultimately it was the oligarchs that decided who would be elected, much like our society today.
