Alan Watts - The Parable of the Chinese Farmer ◆ Life Lessons for Wisdom 🐎🌾
The story of the Chinese farmer is a well-known anecdote, shared by Alan Watts to illustrate the unpredictable and interconnected nature of life. While variations of the story exist, the essence remains the same. 🌾
The story goes like this:
Once upon a time in ancient China, there was a farmer who owned a single horse. One day, the horse ran away. The farmer's neighbors, upon hearing the news, came to express their sympathy, saying, "What bad luck! You've lost your only horse; how will you work the fields now?" The farmer replied, "Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?"
A few days later, the lost horse returned, accompanied by a wild horse. The neighbors, upon witnessing this fortunate turn of events, exclaimed, "How lucky! Now you have two horses; your fortune has changed!" The farmer responded, "Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?"
The farmer's son decided to tame the wild horse, but during the process, he was thrown off and broke his leg. The concerned neighbors once again approached the farmer, saying, "What misfortune! Your son is injured, and now he can't help you with the farm work." The farmer calmly replied, "Misfortune? Good luck? Who knows?"
Soon after, a war broke out, and all able-bodied young men were conscripted into the army. The farmer's son, with a broken leg, was exempted from military service. The neighbors, realizing the potential tragedy that was averted, remarked, "How fortunate that your son didn't have to go to war!" The farmer, maintaining his perspective, said, "Fortunate? Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?"
Alan Watts often used this story to convey the idea that our judgments about events as "good" or "bad" are often shortsighted. Life is a continuous and interconnected series of events, and what may seem like misfortune at one moment could turn out to be a blessing in disguise, and vice versa. The story encourages a perspective of acceptance and non-judgment, reflecting the Zen philosophy of embracing the ever-changing nature of existence with equanimity.
