Yet those who would trust God to really care were heartened by the assurance in the Psalms of ascent. “The Lord will preserve you from all evil…” In our age of doubt and disbelief do we as Christians truly rely on God’s loving care. Do we trust God to really care about our needs? Is he invested in his creation and our well-being?

God has made promises by covenant that are valid for a 1,000 generations! So when he advises us to, “Fear Not!” he is also able to prove true to his promise and protect and guide those who trust him. Do we appreciate God’s faithfulness, or consider his wonderful works for his covenant people, Abraham’s children? If you are a Christian, then consider that you are Abraham’s descendant, regardless of ethnicity, and know that God’s promises are for you, too. The history of Israel is a study in God’s faithfulness in fulfilling his promises to nations and individuals. Though they like Abraham had to wander at times, yet he protected those whose heart was to obey and fear the Lord. But what about us, now? Can we have the confidence in God that will allay our fears?

Stressed? — God's Solution

When faced with bad news, disastrous events or conditions, our fear of the uncertainties of our situation whether personal or societal, can create in us a stress response of anxiety, frustration, anger, or despair. We may not be able to escape these situations that cause us 'distress.' But we have the free will to help us reframe how we view these stressors and focus on godly priorities. Of course even medical science knows that unmitigated stress can produce hormonal changes that cause mental conditions like depression or physical conditions like high blood pressure. So to live the abundant life God intends for us, we must deal effectively with the stress in our life. God did not promise a stress-free existence, rather he assured those who followed him that they would face all of life's challenges. But there would be a difference between those who face stresses without God's vision and those who understand God's purpose in their lives. Many of the biblical writers encourage us to know that God knows and appreciates our situation whatever the circumstances might be that are stressing us. His love for his children is unwavering and his commitment to our ultimate good is steadfast. He is able to free us from our fears and provide our every need. So then the question becomes one of, 'What must we do and what is God's counsel to those who are in the midst of suffering and stressful situations?' Are you awake to what God will be doing in the coming year? There are those who espouse 'Christianity' who do not believe that God will keep his promises. Or perhaps they think that the prophecies were already completed in some historical past. Do you know what God says and do you trust him to be the same yesterday, today and forever? We need to ask ourselves whether our current dilemmas are the result of having forgotten God's ways so that instead of walking fearlessly on his straight path we are stumbling in the darkness. Jesus warned about the false prophets caught up in their faulty predictions of the future, while also reminding us of the need to be prepared for his return - a return that will surely come. So do we believe that God will yet fulfill the prophecies that he delivered to his people over the centuries - prophecies of a righteous remnant who would be delivered and return to restore and rebuild Zion? Were the prophets mistaken? Did God change his mind and his promises are no longer valid? Or, will the Lord God return to save his people, those who trust in him? Will he forgive and redeem those who repent so they will be awake to God's purpose? In the coming year let us be among those who are aware of God's plans and awake to righteousness. The disciples during Jesus' ministry expected Jesus, the Messiah, to fulfill all of the prophecies written about him in the Hebrew scriptures. In fact he had promised them that he had come to fulfill all that was written in the law, the writings, and the prophets. And yet, when quoting the book of Isaiah in the synagogue, Jesus stopped his message half-way through the passage and declared that this portion of the scripture had been fulfilled. Christ had indeed come to bring the 'good news,' but there was more to the prophecy. What remained to be fulfilled did not happen in the first century AD. In fact, it has not yet happened. There are those who would deny the scripture and allegorize away the prophecies saying they are all fulfilled 'spiritually'. But if you believe the reality of scripture then you have the hope that Christ will return as promised to fulfill 'all things.' So what remains to be fulfilled and when will these things happen? The covenants of God served many functions. The covenants provided a form of social organization and a guide to behaviour. They were essential in creating binding relationships of faith, serious life-long relationships. King George of England in 1939 as WW2 loomed large, understood the essence of the covenant, as did his forbear Abraham. The King reminded his people at that critical time in history to, "Go out into the darkness and put your hand in the hand of God. It will be better than a light and safer than the known way." Abraham was able to leave his homeland and journey to a new land, not knowing where he was going, because if his covenant with the Lord God and his trust in the covenantal promises. As Christ's we are heirs of Abraham and the covenant and children of God. Like Abraham we look forward to the promise of eternal life in the City of God, and like Abraham we are called to walk with God in righteousness. God will fulfill his covenant promises, for there is nothing too difficult for God. Are we fulfilling our role as children of God our Father? Covenants of God — The Firstborn and the Inheritance

When Paul wrote that Christ was the firstborn he was highlighting the importance of God's right to select the firstborn. This choosing of the firstborn was typical of ancient societies, but also an important element in the scriptural record. God recorded the story of Jacob and the way in which Ephraim was selected to be 'firstborn' in Israel. As such he was to take a leading role in the covenant relationship with the Lord God that was being passed down from his grandfather, Jacob. God often provides us physical types to help us understand spiritual relationships. When it comes to the covenant, God's covenant was different from that of the surrounding nations. Curses and utter destruction on those who broke the covenant were common themes in the covenants of pagan rulers. But God's covenant began with blessings. And though there were the curses, they did not lead to utter destruction. Rather, they were a matter of discipline to cause people to return to God.
