Ashurbanipal (circa 668 627 BC) Tells His Story and near end of Assyria

I am Ashurbanipal, the mighty ruler of the Assyrian Empire during its zenith. My reign was marked by both conquest and cultural achievement, and I sought to expand the borders of my empire while also promoting learning and scholarship throughout my lands.

One of the most significant challenges I faced during my rule was the rise of Cyrus the Great and the expanding Persian Empire. Cyrus, the ambitious leader of the Persians, sought to challenge the dominance of Assyria and extend his rule over the fertile lands of Mesopotamia.

In 612 BC, the Babylonians, Medes, and Persians formed a coalition against Assyria, leading to the siege and eventual fall of my great capital, Nineveh. Despite my efforts to defend the city, the combined forces of the coalition proved too formidable, and Nineveh was sacked.

Following the fall of Nineveh, I retreated to the city of Harran, where I continued to resist the advancing Persian forces. However, in 609 BC, I was defeated by the Persians in the Battle of Harran, marking the end of Assyrian rule in Mesopotamia.

Though my empire ultimately fell to the Persians, I am remembered for my contributions to Assyrian culture and knowledge. I was a great patron of the arts and literature, and my library in Nineveh was one of the most extensive collections of cuneiform tablets in the ancient world.

Despite the challenges I faced in battle, my legacy endures as one of the most significant figures in ancient Mesopotamian history. I am remembered not only as a warrior king but also as a patron of learning and civilization.
