Darius III Tells His Story of His Defeat by Alexander the Great

I am Darius III, and was born in Persia around 380 BC, inheriting the throne from my father, Artaxerxes III, in 336 BC. My reign was marked by both triumphs and challenges, but none more significant than my encounters with the formidable Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great.

One of the most pivotal moments in my life came during the Battle of Issus in 333 BC, where I faced Alexander's army for the first time. Despite my efforts to repel the Macedonian invasion, my forces were no match for Alexander's superior military tactics and discipline. Though I escaped with my life, the defeat at Issus dealt a severe blow to my authority and the stability of the Persian Empire.

Undeterred by this setback, I rallied my troops and prepared for another showdown with Alexander at the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC. With a vast army at my command, I confronted Alexander's forces on the plains of Gaugamela, hoping to turn the tide of the war in my favor. However, once again, Alexander's brilliance on the battlefield proved too much to overcome, and my forces were soundly defeated.

The loss at Gaugamela marked the end of my resistance against Alexander's relentless advance, and I was forced to flee into the mountains of Persia in a desperate bid to evade capture. Despite my efforts to regroup and resist the Macedonian invasion, my reign came to an abrupt end when I was betrayed and murdered by one of my own satraps in 330 BC.

Though my life ended in tragedy, my legacy lives on as a cautionary tale of the perils of ambition and the consequences of underestimating one's enemies.
