One Officer's Mission to Make a Difference - Deon Joseph Pt 3
If a person walked into a room and sprayed the room with an automatic weapon but didn't hit anyone, would you consider that a violent crime? Of course! Well, thanks to politicians in California it's no longer considered a violent felony. Still a felony but a non-violent one. That's how insane things have gotten in California and how difficult it is for law enforcement there.
Do cops blindly protect other cops? NO. In fact, good cops despise bad cops and rid their profession of the bad apples far faster than other professions. Compared to politicians it's INFINITELY faster!
So what was Deon and other officers' response to the George Floyd incident? He immediately knew that was a crime. And a number of other incidents. But like every profession, the bad and illegal incidents are RARE and they deserve the benefit of the doubt!
Right now some politicians are actively working to replace law enforcement officers with social workers and other passive positions, and it's not only stupid it's dangerous. Many of those social workers may be qualified to lead a discussion in a group setting, but they are not trained, ready for, or equipped to handle "someone on meth swinging a bat in an intersection" as Officer Joseph describes.
Officer Deon Joseph is not just a 25-year law enforcement officer, he's also a homeless advocate, author, and public speaker. He's spent untold hours helping drug addicts, homeless and marginalized citizens receive help, and taken time away from his family to speak to university-age kids and professors, educating them on the realities of the street and policing.
This is part 1 of a fantastic discussion about where we are as a society, especially in light of the defund the police movement and the war on cops. How do we get the pendulum to swing the other way? Deon has some amazing ideas and we all need to take them to heart.
