STN President's Message: February 2024 "Be Aware of the Deceivers!”

We are told that we should be wary of those who wish to deceive us. It certainly is important for us to understand the definition of deceit before we journey further into this discussion. Deceit is defined as the act or practice of deceiving, concealment, or distortion of the truth for the purpose of misleading, duplicity, fraud, or cheating. It is also defined as something intended or serving to convey a false impression.

The unfortunate truth, however, is that recognizing just who the deceivers are is often difficult. You see, they use techniques to hide their deception. As an example, they may use phrases or slogans to make you think that they agree with you or are like-minded. They may say something to the effect of; “I can help you”, or “I understand”, or “I know just how you feel”. This is done in order for you to lower your defenses. However, you must be able to see through the deception. We should know about these deceivers. We certainly have been told the truth and we have also been warned about such deception. Matthew 7:15 tells us to; “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”

I have worked diligently to observe and eliminate deceivers in STN. I have said from the inception of the Shield of Truth Network Inc. that there is no place here for egos or hidden agendas. And yes, it has been necessary to root out deceivers over the last several years. Those who wished to subvert the core values of STN.

But we must hold strongly to the truth and remember what we have been told as is noted in 1 Timothy 4:1 which warns us again by telling us that; “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.”

We are also told that we must put every potential deceiver to the test. As we see in 1 John 4:1 which tells us; “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world”. Also, in 1 Thessalonians 5:21 we are told “But test everything, hold fast to what is good”.

I felt led to warn us all about this concern through recent events which I experienced. A deceiver tried to gain my confidence, however, my “deceiver radar” was up, and this individual was forced to reveal the truth. You see, as Christian Brothers and Sisters, we can all be compelled to be perhaps a little too trusting, particularly in these contentious times in which we live. The old adage “Trust but verify” is something that we all need to be cognizant of today more than ever perhaps.

You see, if we are not diligent in our discernment, we will be led down the wrong path, not intentionally on our part, but by the gradual and progressive drip of deceit. This may, in turn, lead us into a trap from which we would have a great deal of difficulty in escaping.

I would like to end with 2 verses to consider this month. The first is from Psalm 5:6; “You destroy those who speak lies; The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.” The second verse is from Psalm 101:7; “No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.”

Please be diligent in your observation of others. Keep your eyes wide open, and your ears perked. The spirit will guide you. When you hear that voice in your head telling you that something isn’t right, or you feel that something is not as it should be, please listen. The Holy Spirit speaks to us constantly, and we need to be listening at all times.
