As a child Scott's dad took him with him, letting Scott see all of the inner workings of the The Outfit, the good, the bad, and the executions. Scott saw everything.

Scott wasn't being groomed to follow in his father's footsteps, instead he was being shown a life, his father wanted him to understand, so he could make his own mind up.

No lies, no glamour, this is real life, real people, real corruption. His rather knew how to read people and knew how to mind his own business, and this is why he lived the life, and died an old man.
