Iran Claims Antarctica!

In the news today, Iran claims territory in Antarctica, and announced plans for a military base there, in violation of international treaty. But this isn't today's news! Iran made this claim last fall. The Universe was asked why we're being directed to think about Antarctica today? Insights and information were sought about this situation in particular and Antarctica in general.
