Dash and bodycam video released in deadly police-involving shooting of an ex-con in Woodbridge

The N.J. Attorney General has identified a 40-year-old Perth Amboy man as a vehicle-theft suspect, fatally shot in a Dec. 28th gunfight with two Cranford police officers at Garden State Parkway Exit 131 in Woodbridge.

Killed in that shootout was Kevin J. Harlfinger.

Cranford Officers Christopher P. Folinusz and Ryan McSharry pursued Harlfinger, allegedly driving a stolen van, down the Parkway from Union County to Woodbridge, where the van crashed on the off-ramp, state authorities said.

Then, Harlfinger exchanged gunfire with the two cops, the Attorney General's office said.

One gunshot wounded Officer Folinusz’s arm during the exchange. He was briefly hospitalized for treatment and is still recuperating at home.

A brief Jan. 9th statement from N.J. Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin does not say which officer fired the gunshot(s) that killed Harlfinger, pronounced dead at the scene at 12:05 a.m. on Dec. 29th.

An “illegally-owned gun” that Harlfinger allegedly used was found near his body, Platkin’s statement said.

Authorities provided few details about Harlfinger. However, state prison records indicate Harlfinger has past convictions – for burglaries, criminal mischief, and narcotics possession – that date back to 2017, including arrests in Edison and Franklin Township.

Harlfinger, who recently lived in Perth Amboy, previously lived in Metuchen with his younger brother, Tommy Roy Ault.
