As a master fitter and machinist converting between the two s.i. all too often, as part of the daily job, I gotta say imperial is much preferred, be it fractional or decimal. Thousandths of inch is much nicer than decimals of millimetres. Especially for machining. Producing fine tolerance machined metric parts and threads, manually, on imperial equipment?. It's like an art of its own. Like having a Metric machine and then needing to make an imperial part. Fun fun fun! :D
People think 'iRobot' will be able to make and fix everything. I think not. You don't see the coal face of 'Maintenance' corporate style. Throwaway machines does not work. Things need to be repaired, and imagination is generally required. There's only so much you can melt down and re-make all over again. The snake eats its tail.
