March First Movement: Korean Struggle for Independence
The March First Movement, also known as the Sam-il Movement, emerged in 1919 as a significant protest against Japanese colonial rule in Korea. Led by 33 cultural leaders, the movement demanded independence from Imperial Japan and attracted widespread support from thousands in Seoul and other cities. Despite being brutally suppressed by Japanese authorities, the movement ignited a wave of national unity and resistance across Korea.
The protests, which occurred in over 1,000 demonstrations, marked the largest collective action against foreign domination in Korean history. However, the Japanese government, with its complete control over the media, attempted to conceal the growing unrest and downplay the significance of the movement. It is remarkable that Wilson's "Fourteen Points," delivered in a speech to the US Congress on January 8, 1918, profoundly impacted global movements for sovereignty, including Korea's struggle against Japanese rule.
