People pleasing is the tendency to seek approval and prioritize others’ needs, rather than aligning with our personal values and desires. External validation is the constant pursuit of people pleasers. This is a disconnection from the authentic self, leading to self-neglect, self-rejection, and self-sabotage. The ultimate cost is self-abandonment. People-pleasers often struggle to set and maintain healthy boundaries, leading to overcommitment, burnout, and a depletion of personal resources, all of which are detrimental to achieving optimal health and wealth.

Inauthentic behaviors affect us on the physical, mental, and emotional levels. Constriction of the throat is an example of a physical impact. Mental expenses include self-censorship and the adoption of false personas to fit in or avoid conflict. Emotional consequences of self-abandonment include loss of identity and low self-worth, and limiting beliefs. People pleasers may also attract inauthentic relationships that are based on false expectations and a skewed version of their true selves.

Overcoming people pleasing involves developing self-awareness, setting healthy boundaries, and cultivating the courage to prioritize one's true path in life. It requires learning to say no when necessary, dealing with differences of opinion at times, accepting differences, and embracing vulnerability. By breaking free from the cycle of people pleasing, we cultivate genuine connections, pursue our high desires, and lead purposeful lives.
