Agate is a variety of chalcedony, which itself is a form of microcrystalline quartz. It forms in concentric layers within cavities or fissures of volcanic rock, often as nodules or geodes. This unique formation process imbues agate with its distinctive banded patterns, ranging from vibrant hues to more subdued tones.
