Biography via Wikipedia: Ludwig van Beethoven, Bonn, 16 December 1770 – Vienna, 26 March 1827) was a German composer, pianist and conductor.
A crucial figure of Western classical music, he was the last notable representative of Viennese classicism and is considered one of the greatest and most influential composers of all time. Counted among the greatest geniuses in the history of music, despite the deafness (hearing loss) that struck him before he even reached the age of thirty, he continued to compose, conduct and play, leaving a fundamental musical production, extraordinary for its expressive strength and ability evocative.
His influence was of vital importance for the musical language of the 19th century and for subsequent ones, so much so that he represented a model for many composers. The myth of Beethoven as a "heroic artist", capable of transmitting his every emotion, personal experience or feeling through his work, grew greatly in the Romantic period, however, while anticipating many aspects of future Romanticism, his adherence to the rules of harmony in modulations, the rejection of chromaticisms in melodies, place him in the tradition of classicism.
Masterpieces of their respective genres also remain his sacred compositions, such as the Missa Solemnis, and theatrical ones, such as Fidelio.
Childhood and adolescence
«Ludwig van Beethoven is an eleven-year-old boy with a very promising talent. He plays the piano with great skill and strength, reads very well at sight, and, to cut a long story short, plays for the most part Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier which was put into his hand by Mr. Neefe. Beethoven's family, of humble origins, had a musical tradition for two generations. His paternal grandfather, from whom he took his name, Ludwig van Beethoven (Malines, 1712 – Bonn, 1773) descended from a family from Flanders (in Belgium) of farmers and humble workers, originally from Brabant. The particle "van" therefore does not (in all probability) have noble origins and the surname "Beethoven" almost certainly derives from the village of Bettenhoven, near Waremme, in the province of Liège. Around 1500, the name "van Beethoven" was written as "van Bettehoven".
A good musician, Beethoven's grandfather had moved to Bonn in 1732. His son, Johann van Beethoven (1740 – 1792), Beethoven's father, was a musician and tenor at the prince's court. A mediocre and brutal man, addicted to alcohol, he educated his children with great harshness.
