ICYMI: Ukrainian guards filmed beating ‘draft dodgers’

12.03.24 - Ukrainian security officials have been filmed beating men who had been detained as suspected draft dodgers. The Ukrainian border guard service reported that 35 men had been detained while attempting to cross into Romania, supposedly to avoid the military draft.

Photos and videos of the incident have been shared on social media, and appear to show border guards and plain clothes security officers dragging the men out of their minibus and throwing them to the ground, slapping them while doing so. Another video shows the driver of the minibus on the ground with an officer kneeling on his neck, before being beaten by the man filming.

Kiev has not commented on the guards’ actions, and official photos released by the agency only show the detainees kneeling on the ground.
