Robert F. Kennedy Jr. named the Bay Area lawyer, entrepreneur and philanthropist as his running mate.

Raised on welfare in a single-parent household in Oakland, California, the daughter of a Chinese immigrant, Nicole Shanahan went from a successful career as a patent lawyer and entrepreneur.

Shanahan, 38, also runs a foundation focused on reproductive rights, criminal justice and the environment.

Before backing Kennedy’s independent bid, Shanahan had previously been a donor to Democratic campaigns, including supporting Joe Biden’s election in 2020.
