Six people were missing and presumed dead after container ship crashed into bridge in US
Six people were missing and presumed dead, and the search for them was suspended until now after container ship crashed into the landmark Francis Scott Key Bridge near the US city of Baltimore, causing most of it to collapse.
Several vehicles on the bridge at the time plunged into the waters of the River Patapsco. Hours later, the Coast Guard said at least six people were presumed dead.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency and the Port of Baltimore remains closed to ships.
President Joe Biden vowed the federal government will cover "the entire cost" of rebuilding the bridge and reopening the port.
The crash happened in the middle of the night, long before the busy morning commute on the bridge that stretches 2.6 kilometers and was used by 12 million vehicles last year.
The six missing people were part of a construction crew filling potholes on the bridge, said Paul Wiedefeld, the state’s transportation secretary.
Guatemala’s consulate in Maryland said in a statement that two of the missing were citizens of the Central American nation. It did not provide their names but said consular officials were in contact with authorities and assisting the families.
