What are they? What can be said of them? Why are they important? Do they really have apocalyptic implications?

The short answer to their apocalyptic quality is almost assuredly a resounding, “Yes.”

Numbers 19 starts with an explanation for the sacrifice of a completely red heifer (female calf). This red heifer is to be used for ritual cleansing. However, there are some very surprising aspects about this calf:

IT. MUST. BE. IMMACULATE.

This is not an exaggeration. It truly must be immaculate because it exists as one of the only ways, outside of an ancient old covenant (Old Testament) temple to purify things. It is believed by the Jewish people that these heifers are needed as sacrifices to thus prepare the grounds for the 3rd temple.
