If Donald Trump wins the presidency this year, he’s suggesting he will fire the so-called deep state. This is possible because of a change to rules that was made to the Office of Personnel Management, and would allow a president to fire people who otherwise would be part of a permanent bureaucracy. Yet, there’s now a battle taking place over these rules. The Biden administration has since undone the Trump-era changes in a bid to protect the unelected officials. Yet, even this move can potentially be rolled back—placing the so-called deep state on unstable ground.
