Why are Smart Meters being forced onto us with no choice

Discussing how they forced one of these smart meters onto me with no option last year

could these smart meters give us cancer or possibly even be used for mind control as they seem massively overengineered and are essentially a remote controlled high powered box that can send out signals which is surely dodgy alongside the fact they are forcing these onto us with no choice
