Can France be Forced to Repay Billions it Looted from Haiti?

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It is overrun by gangs, who have even forced the country's Prime Minister to resign.

But how did things get so bad for Haiti? Part of the blame lies with Haiti's former colonial overlord, France. After Haiti defeated the French and won its independence in 1804, France wanted revenge.

In 1825, it sent an armada to Haiti, and threatened the new country of free Africans who were enslaved.

France demanded 150 million francs to allow Haiti to remain free. Haiti had no choice but to take the deal, and it spend 122 years paying the French debt.

In today's terms, that comes to anywhere between $150-200 billion.
