A Warning To All Of Us: AI-Generated Hoaxes Can Happen To Anyone

In January, a shocking recording of a Pikesville High School Principal Eric Eiswert, spread like wildfire across social media. In it, Eiswert was heard raging against students and staff of the school, making deeply offensive racist and anti-Semitic comments. The community was left stunned, and Eiswert was put on leave until an investigation could be done. Meanwhile, the news repeatedly spoke of the incident, sewing into their audience that, though the authenticity of the recording was in question, there was little doubt that it was real. However, on April 25th a story broke that the recording had been AI generated, exonerating the Principal of the accusations against him. As for who created the recording and why - that was an even bigger shock. The question is - will his innocence matter to the outrage mob?

As AI develops and becomes more accessible to everyone, through everything from apps to sophisticated technology - while a culture of bitterness and anger grows in parallel to its development, how worried should innocent people be of this being used as a weapon? And would we know a fake recording if we heard it, or a fabricated video if we saw it?
