Les Rois maudits/The Accursed Kings (1972 Miniseries - ENG SUB) | The Iron King (Episode 1)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
The Accursed Kings (French title: Les Rois maudits) is a French mini-series in six 102-minute episodes, directed by Claude Barma based on Marcel Jullian's adaptation of the novels of the same name by Maurice Druon. Audio in French with English subtitles.
The 1972 TV adaptation of Les Rois maudits was broadcast by the ORTF from 21 December 1972 to 24 January 1973, and starred Jean Piat as Robert d'Artois and Hélène Duc as Mahaut d'Artois. Adapted by Marcel Jullian and directed by Claude Barma, its six episodes were directly based on—and named after—the first six novels in Druon's series. Music was composed by Georges Delerue. Dubbed "the French I, Claudius", the series was hugely succesful, and brought the novels from cult to mainstream success. The production was shot in studio, with minimal sets. The series was broadcast in the United Kingdom by the BBC in French with English subtitles in June–July 1974 and again in August–September 1975.
American author George R. R. Martin called the author "France's best historical novelist since Alexandre Dumas, père". Martin dubbed The Accursed Kings "the original game of thrones", citing Druon's novels as an inspiration for his own series A Song of Ice and Fire, which has been adapted for television as Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Martin's UK publisher HarperCollins began reissuing the long out of print Accursed Kings series in 2013, with Martin himself writing an introduction.
Les Rois maudits is a direct adaptation of the first six volumes of the eponymous novel by Maurice Druon, from the French Academy, published between 1955 and 1960. The seventh volume of the series, "Quand un roi perd la France" (The King Without a Kingdom), published in 1977, was not covered in this television adaptation, or the one in 2005.
Episode 1: March 1314 - To recover his county of which he claims to have been stripped, Robert of Artois will intrigue in London with his cousin Isabelle, daughter of King Philippe and denounce the adultery committed by the princesses of Burgundy, one of whom is the future queen of France.
At the beginning of the 14th century, Philip the Fair reigned with an iron fist over a kingdom with empty coffers. Consumed by jealousy, he attacks Jacques de Molay, grand master of the Templars with insolent wealth. Condemned to be burned alive, the Templar cursed the Capetians for 13 generations from the top of his pyre. A curse not without consequences!

The Barchester Chronicles - TV Series 1982 (Episode 1)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
The Barchester Chronicles is a 1982 British television serial produced by Jonathan Powell for the BBC. It is an adaptation by Alan Plater of Anthony Trollope's first two Chronicles of Barsetshire, The Warden (1855) and Barchester Towers (1857). The series was directed by David Giles. Click on CC for English subtitles.
The clerical community around Barchester's cathedral is rocked by a press investigation into the finances of Hiram's Hospital almshouse. Following the death of the bishop in the midst of the controversy, the chaplain and wife of the new bishop lead a reforming crusade, which arouses strong opposition within the diocese. These public events have a significant effect on the private lives of many of those involved.
Episode 1: Rev. Septimus Harding is much-loved in Barchester, perhaps the most beloved citizen in the county. In addition to the work at his church, which includes a superb choir, he is also Warden of a local hospital where a group of elderly gentlemen reside and receive a small stipend from the will of a benefactor who died some 400 years ago. Dr. John Bold has been tasked to look into this will to determine if its wishes are being correctly applied. He is particularly concerned the Rev. Harding is in receipt of an annual stipend of £800 per year - a considerable increase in the original amount owing to a vast increase in the value of the property - while its residents receive only 1s6d per day. The results of Bold's investigations figure prominently in a newspaper article denouncing the practices of the Church of England. Rev. Harding takes all of the criticism in his stride, even beginning to wonder if his remuneration might in fact be excessive. His daughter Eleanor however does not and any hope that John Bold may have had of marrying the girl have seemingly come to an end.

Adaneth - Cinema&TV
Episode 2: Eleanor Harding pleads with John Bold to stop his attacks on her father. He doesn't see his attack as personal but one against the perceived corruption of the Church of England whose members live in luxury while the poor starve. In the end he agrees to stop the court action and so informs Archdeacon Grantly, Septimus Harding's son-in-law. Eleanor and John also agree to be married. It's not all that simple for Septimus Harding however. He is greatly disturbed by the accusations made against him and travels to London to speak to the Church's solicitor, Sir Abraham Haphazard. Although the suit has been dropped, he asks his legal counsel if it is also a moral victory. When Haphazard says he is unable to speak to morality, Septimus decides to resign as Warden.

Episode 4: As suggested by Bishop Proudie, the Rev. Septimus Harding calls on Rev. Obadiah Slope to discuss the possibility of being reappointed Warden of the hospital. Septimus is offended not only by Slope's manner but also the conditions he's laid down should the appointment be accepted. Slope is clearly using the appointment to his own advantage. Rather than arrange for a meeting with the Bishop as Septimus Harding had requested, he reports that Rev. Harding rejected the offer. Slope then offers the post to Mr. Quiverful who is more than pleased to accept, given that his household includes 14 children. Slope continues to dangle the possibility of her father's appointment with Mrs. Bold, in whom he has an interest - or at least interest in the fact that she is a rich widow.

Episode 5: Obadiah Slope continues to manipulate those around him. Having overstepped the mark and offered the position of hospital Warden to Rev. Quiverful, he gets Bishop Proudie to agree that should Quiverful opt to withdraw his acceptance, they would be in a position to offer it once again to Septimus Harding. Slope manipulates the kindly Quiverful into withdrawing his acceptance but doesn't quite count on Mrs. Quiverful who goes straight to Mrs. Proudie to complain. When the Bishop's wife learns that Slope used her name in his dealings with Quiverful, he makes an enemy that no man would dare want. Slope has also continued his visits to Signora Madeline Neroni, with whom he is clearly smitten. Meanwhile, Septimus Harding and his daughter Eleanor visit his son-in-law Archdeacon Grantly and elder daughter Susan. Mr. Grantly is still preparing to go to war with Slope and objects when Eleanor receives a letter from him.

Episode 6: Obadiah Slope's machinations are slowly catching up to him. The Dean of Barchester Cathedral is on his death bed and many in the community are outraged when an article appears in the local newspaper suggesting that Slope should be named as his replacement. It's apparent to everyone that Slope was the source of the suggestion. At the Thorne's annual garden party, Eleanor Bold is hoping to spend some time with Francis Arabin who she finds attractive and interesting. Slope however seems to interrupt any such attempt and when he finally proposes to her, she has a very sharp - and painful - response. To her amazement, Slope's isn't the only proposal of marriage she receives that day.

Obadiah Slope's objections fall on deaf ears as does his suggestion that he should be named Dean. He soon realizes that his future is indeed dire. Rev. Septimus Hardinge is thrilled to be offered the post of Dean leading his son-in-law and both daughters to rejoice. They're not prepared however for his response to the offer. Following Madeline Neroni's advice, Eleanor makes her feelings for Francis Arabin known and they are soon engaged to be married.

Emma is a six-part TV serial adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma by BBC Television that was broadcast in 1972. It was directed by John Glenister. Audio in English with English subtitles (Click on CC).
This dramatisation brings to life the wit and humour of Jane Austen's novel Emma, recreating the female character of whom she wrote "no one but myself could like."
Emma presides over the small provincial world of Highbury with enthusiasm, but she finds that it is all too easy to confuse good intentions with self-gratification. Often insensitive, well-meaning and incorrigible, having engineered the marriage of her governess, companion and friend Miss Taylor, she now turns her attention towards making a match for the local vicar Mr Elton and her new protégée Harriet Smith. Her one voice of reason and restraint is Mr Knightley, who has known her since she was a child and who watches her behaviour with wry amusement but sometimes with real anger. Alongside, the lives of other characters proceed in ways not always understood by Emma, and she has many lessons to learn before the end of the story.
Episode 1: Emma Woodhouse has just attended the marriage of a dear friend and now fears that her own life will become boring & dull.

Casanova (TV Series 1971) | Steed in the Stable (Episode 1)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
Casanova is a British television drama serial, written by television playwright Dennis Potter. Directed by Mark Cullingham and John Glenister, the serial was made by the BBC and screened on the BBC2 network in November and December 1971. It is loosely based on Italian adventurer Giacomo Casanova's Histoire de ma vie (Story of My Life; 1780–1792). It was Dennis Potter's first television serial, having previously written single plays for the BBC's The Wednesday Play and Play for Today series. Frank Finlay starred in the title role and was nominated for the best actor award at the 1972 BAFTA ceremony.
Episode 1: After being arrested and charged with "foul atheism" and fornication, Casanova is sentenced to five years imprisonment at "The Leads": the most notorious of Venetian gaols. Brutalised by Lorenzo the gaoler and devoid of hope under the harsh prison regime, Casanova's mind wanders back to his past loves and adventures. He finds himself haunted by the memory of Christina, a simple country girl he gave to another rather than marry her himself.

Maria Theresia (Part I-ENG SUB)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
Maria Theresia is a 2017 Austrian-Czech historical miniseries. It was a co-production of the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary. For the second and third season German ZDF and Franco-German Arte joined the production, replacing the Hungarian broadcaster. Audio in German with English subtitles (click on CC for subtitles).
Its first two episodes were broadcast in 2017, with two more in 2019 and a fifth and final part premiered on streaming at the end of 2021 before being broadcast in 2022.
Parts 1 and 2 narrate about two decades of Austrian history from 1723 to Maria Theresa's coronation as Hungarian queen on June 25, 1741. The focus is on the love story between Maria Theresa and her husband Franz Stephan of Lorraine. Parts 3 and 4 continue the story up to the coronation as the Bohemian Queen in 1743. Part 5 spans the last 20 years of her life with the focus on marriage politics.
Part I: Prague, 1723. Six-year-old Maria Theresa sees her life clearly planned: one day she will marry Franz Stephan of Lorraine and have many children with him. Everyone is waiting for the longed-for male descendant of Maria Theresa's father Charles VI but nine years later he is still not born. Due to the advanced age of Empress Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, the doctor has meanwhile given up all hope. Professor Gottfried Philipp Spannagel therefore recommends to deepen the upbringing of the firstborn Maria Theresa in order to prepare her for a possible reign.
Charles VI asks Eugene of Savoy to begin the wedding negotiations with Franz Stephan of Lorraine. Prince Eugene, however, has other plans: he has designed another husband for Maria Theresa, who should guarantee that there will be no war with Prussia. Eugene begins negotiations with Friedrich Wilhelm von Grumbkow: according to their plans, Maria Theresa is to be married to Crown Prince Friedrich of Prussia.
Maria Theresa suggests that Franz Stephan should give up his Duchy of Lorraine in favor of France, and in return he should get Tuscany. France will therefore recognise the Pragmatic Sanction and Franz Stephan will marry Maria Theresa.
Cast & Characters:
Marie-Luise Stockinger: Maria Theresa
Vojtěch Kotek: Francis of Lorraine
Zuzana Stivínová: Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel
Fritz Karl: Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor
Tatiana Pauhofová: Elisa Fritz
Karl Markovics: Prince Eugene of Savoy
Zoltán Rátóti: Friedrich Wilhelm von Grumbkow
Anna Posch: Maria Anna of Austria
Nathalie Köbli: Wilhelmine Colloredo
Jan Budař: Jean Baptiste Bassand
Martin Myšička: Count Schwarz
Ervin Nagy: Paul Esterházy
Julia Stemberger: Marie Karoline von Fuchs-Mollard
Alexander Bárta: Count Kinsky
Zuzana Mauréry: Mademoiselle de Chartres
The cast consists of Austrian, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian actors. The actors all spoke their native language during filming and were then dubbed over depending on the country of broadcast.
Historical inaccuracies
- The Prussian Marshal Grumbkow was not executed, but died of natural causes.
- There is no evidence of the infidelity of Maria Theresa. An affair and the birth of an illegitimate child play an important role in the 4th part, but it does not correspond to the facts. Maria Theresa loved her husband very much despite his affairs. She was also a devout Catholic and would never ever consider an affair, not even as a widow. After Francis Stephen died, she completely withdrew from court life, wore black for the rest of her life, and she even had her rooms painted black.

Maria Theresia (Part II-ENG SUB)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
Part II: After the death of her father Charles VI, Maria Theresa and Franz Stephan return to the Viennese court with their third daughter: Maria Theresa has to take over her father's throne. Several European princes lay claims on the Habsburg hereditary lands and the Holy Roman Empire. There is danger from the south, north, and west, and moreover the Prussian Marshal Grumbkow is still at the Viennese court. Maria Theresia is uncertain whether the pragmatic sanction will be accepted by everyone. She makes Count Kinsky, whom she had previously despised because of his supposed closeness to the late Prince Eugene, as her political advisor. He advises her to get support from Count Nikolaus I Esterhazy.
Friedrich II proposes to Maria Theresa that he could support Franz Stephan in the election to emperor, and asks for Silesia in return. Maria Theresa does not accept Friedrich's offer. After the invasion of Prussian troops is welcomed with joy by the population in Silesia, Maria Theresa tries to alleviate the hunger among the soldiers in order to increase their motivation. Soon afterwards the Prussians also invade Bohemia. The Prussians offer an armistice if the annexed territories are granted to Prussia, and Maria Theresia accepts. In the meantime, the longed-for male descendant Joseph is born.
The Bavarians declare war on Austria and France joins the war against the Austrians. Maria Theresa tries to raise the morale of her troops with the support of the church and promises them better equipment and food. Moreover, she also looks for support from the Hungarians. Maria Theresia presents herself in front of the Hungarian Diet and is finally crowned Queen of Hungary.

Maria Theresia Part 3 and 4 were broadcast in 2019. Audio in German with English subtitles (hardcoded).
Part III: After the loss of Silesia to Friedrich II, the armistice with Prussia does not seem to last long. Everywhere seem to be lurking enemies who want to conquer parts of the Habsburg Kingdom. Behind the back of Maria Theresa, Franz Stephan of Lorraine does business with Prussia and Friedrich II in his Palace in Wallnerstrasse, selling him uniforms and tents among other things.
Maria Theresa also pays a personal price for her commitment as head of state, because her husband Franz Stephan turns to other women. She accuses Franz Stephan of enjoying immoral gambling while they are losing the war. Franz Stephan, on the other hand, argues that the income from his immoral gambling would finance their moral war.
Maria Theresa suspects that her mother-in-law, Élisabeth Charlotte d’Orléans, at the moment in Vienna under the pretense of visiting her grandchildren, is actually an informant for the French king.

Part IV: Trenck's campaigns brought the desired military success, but Maria Theresa has to recognise that it also opened the door to crime and cruelty: Trenck's Pandurs inflicted hardship and misery to the civilian population, raping and murdering them. Maria Theresa is harshly judging him but also herself. From now on, morality becomes her top priority and she set up a chastity committee, headed by Father Johannes. In the most severe cases, prostitutes and sinners risk being deported to Banat by boats.
On the orders of the Papal Nuncio, Father Johannes send spies also to the Palace of Franz Stephan in Wallnerstrasse, who is suspected of being the Grand Master of the Freemasons. He is also suspected to make business with Protestant countries, to the disapproval of the Catholic Church. Maria Theresa decrees strict Catholicism morals for those around her, and her police takes action against gambling and prostitution. She decides also to meet her husband, from whom she feels increasingly alienated and betrayed.
After Maria Theresa's troops succeed in liberating Prague from the French who supported the Bavarians, the Bohemian nobles swore allegiance to Maria Theresa, who is crowned Queen of Bohemia.

Part V: By 1760, Franz Stephan was the Holy Roman Emperor and Maria Theresa's co-regent, but she was largely the only one who ran the affairs of state. Political marriages were intended to secure the Habsburg Empire. Love played no role in this. Her many children had to submit to politics. Disappointed, Franz Stephan increasingly withdrew to Hof Palace. While he turned to profitable business, Maria Theresa had her heir to the throne, Archduke Joseph, educated to the highest level. He now grew up to be a liberal rival of his mother and a bitter opponent of his often absent father. His marriage to Isabella of Parma was both his great happiness and his deepest misfortune. When Franz Stephan died unexpectedly in 1765, Joseph became co-regent with his mother, who had no intention of sharing power with him.

The young Magistrate of the cathedral, Don Fermín de Pas, a handsome and ambitious man, agrees to be Ana's spiritual director, recommending a long general confession. At the end of it, Don Fermín finds himself attracted to Ana. Doña Paula, the Magistrate's mother, notices a change in her son's behavior and warns him of the risk that a love affair could pose to his advancement in the ecclesiastical career. Ana, for her part, finds herself attracted to another man, Don Álvaro de Mesía, the "Don Juan" of Vetusta.

The Stalls of Barchester - A Ghost Story for Christmas (1971)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
The Stalls of Barchester is a short film which serves as the first of the British supernatural anthology series "A Ghost Story for Christmas".
Written, produced, and directed by the series' creator Lawrence Gordon Clark, it is based on the ghost story "The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral" by M. R. James, first published in the collection More Ghost Stories (1911).
It stars Robert Hardy as Archdeacon Haynes of the fictional Barchester Cathedral, whose mysterious death is investigated 50 years later by the scholar Dr. Black (Clive Swift), and first aired on BBC1 on 24 December 1971.
In adapting the story for film, Clark set the story of the Archdeacon within the frame narrative of Dr Black's discovery of his diary, and the scholar's subsequent investigation into the origin of the carvings. Unlike the original story, the supernatural elements are shown, as opposed to being implied by the diary, albeit in shadowy glimpses.
The adaptation was filmed on location at Norwich Cathedral and the surrounding cathedral close.
Cast & Characters:
Clive Swift as Dr. Black
Will Leighton as the cathedral librarian
Robert Hardy as Dr. Haynes
Thelma Barlow as Letitia Haynes
Harold Bennett as Archdeacon Pulteney

A Warning to the Curious is a short film, the second of the British supernatural anthology series "A Ghost Story for Christmas". Audio in English with English subtitles (Click on CC for subtitles).
Written, produced, and directed by the series' creator, Lawrence Gordon Clark, it is based on the ghost story of the same name by M. R. James, first published in the collection A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories (1925) and first aired on BBC1 on 24 December 1972. At 50 minutes it is the longest installment in the series' original run.
It stars Peter Vaughan as Paxton, an amateur archaeologist whose attempt to track down one of the three legendary crowns of East Anglia causes him to be followed by the ghost of its last guardian, William Ager (John Kearney). He seeks the assistance of the vacationing scholar Dr. Black (Clive Swift) in order to return the crown and end the haunting.
In adapting the story, Clark changed the protagonist of the original from a young, innocent amateur who discovers the crown by accident to a middle-aged man (Peter Vaughan) who travels to Seaburgh specifically to find the crown. The era is updated to 1929, the background of the Depression adding an extra layer to Paxton's search for the treasure. The narrative layering of the original James story is dispensed with and a chronological narrative is used instead. Clark also included the character of Dr. Black (Clive Swift), who first appeared in "The Stalls of Barchester".
For "A Warning to the Curious", "Seaburgh" (a disguised version of Aldeburgh, Suffolk) was filmed on the coast of North Norfolk at Holkham Beach and Holkham Wood at Holkham Gap, Happisburgh, Wells-next-the-Sea and at the Sheringham and Weybourne stations of the North Norfolk Railway.
Cast & Characters:
Peter Vaughan as Mr Paxton
Clive Swift as Dr. Black
Julian Herington as Archaeologist
John Kearney as Ager / The Guardian
David Cargill as Boots
George Benson as Vicar
Roger Milner as antique shop owner
Gilly Fraser as girl at cottage

Lost Hearts - A Ghost Story for Christmas (1973)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
Lost Hearts is a short film, the third of the British supernatural anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas. Written by Robin Chapman, produced by Rosemary Hill, and directed by the series' creator, Lawrence Gordon Clark, it is based on the 1895 ghost story of the same name by M. R. James and first aired on BBC1 on 25 December 1973.
The drama tells the story of Stephen Elliott, a young orphan aged 11 years and of an inquiring frame of mind, who is sent to stay with his much older cousin, the scholarly Mr Abney, at a remote country mansion, Aswarby Hall, in Lincolnshire. His cousin is a reclusive alchemist obsessed with making himself immortal. Abney's library "contained all the then available books bearing on the Mysteries, the Orphic poems, the worship of Mithras, and the Neo–Platonists." Stephen is repeatedly troubled by visions of a young gypsy girl and a travelling Italian boy with their hearts missing.
Ormsby Hall in South Ormsby in Lincolnshire stood in for the exterior shots of Aswarby Hall, while the churchyard of the nearby St Leonard's church in the village featured in the final scenes including the ghostly children waving to Stephen. Harrington Hall in Harrington, Lincolnshire was used for the interior of Aswarby Hall, as well as a few outside scenes. The interiors seen in the film were all destroyed by a fire which occurred in 1991. The Pelham Mausoleum near Brocklesby in Great Limber near Grimsby also featured in the production.
Cast & Characters:
Mr Abney as Joseph O'Conor
Mrs Bunch as Susan Richards
Stephen as Simon Gipps-Kent
Parkes as James Mellor

The Treasure of Abbot Thomas - A Ghost Story for Christmas (1974-ENG SUB)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
The Treasure of Abbot Thomas is a short film which serves as the fourth episode of the British supernatural anthology television series "A Ghost Story for Christmas". Audio in English with English subtitles (Click on CC for subtitles.)
Written by John Bowen, produced by Rosemary Hill, and directed by the series' creator, Lawrence Gordon Clark, it is based on the ghost story of the same name by M. R. James, first published in the collection Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904), and first aired on BBC1 on 23 December 1974.
It stars Michael Bryant as the academic Rev. Justin Somerton, who along with his protoge Peter, Lord Dattering (Paul Lavers) seeks to uncover the supposed resting place of a cache of gold which once belonged to Abbot Thomas (John Herrington), a disgraced 15th century alchemist. It is the first entry in the series to feature original music, composed by Geoffrey Burgon.
In creating his adaptation, Bowen changed a number of elements of M. R. James's story, such as removing Somerton's servant Brown from the story and adding another character – Peter, Lord Dattering (Paul Lavers)[a] – as Somerton's protégé, with whom he shares his investigation. Unlike James's original story, the television version is not told in flashback, and includes a scene in which Somerton exposes two fraudulent mediums, which acts as a demonstration of Somerton's rational approach to the supernatural.
Although James's original story was set in Germany, for budgetary reasons in the television version the action was relocated to England. Clark used the grounds of Wells Cathedral in Somerset for the entrance to the well where Abbot Thomas hid his treasure. Wells Cathedral Chapter House and its adjoining steps also were used in various scenes. The house featured is Orchardleigh, on the outskirts of Frome - also in Somerset. The 13th-century church of St Mary, Orchardleigh also featured in the production, as did Vicars' Close in Wells, Somerset.
Cast & Characters:
Michael Bryant as Rev. Justin Somerton
Paul Lavers as Peter, Lord Dattering
Frank Mills as Mr Tyson
Sheila Dunn as Mrs Tyson
John Herrington as Abbot Thomas
Virginia Balfour as Lady Dattering
Peggy Aitchison as Landlady

The Ash Tree is a short film which is part of the British supernatural anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas. Audio in English with English subtitles (Click on CC for Subtitles.)
Written by David Rudkin, produced by Rosemary Hill, and directed by the series' creator, Lawrence Gordon Clark, it is based on the ghost story "The Ash-tree" by M. R. James, first published in the collection Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904), and first aired on BBC1 on 23 December 1975.
It stars Edward Petherbridge in the dual role of Sir Richard, an 18th century aristocrat who inherits the estate of his late uncle, and of Sir Matthew, his 17th century ancestor whose role in the witch trial of Ann Mothersole (Barbara Ewing) haunts Sir Richard via nighttime visions. Sir Richard is also disturbed by strange noises coming from an ash tree outside his bedroom window, which is revealed to have a connection with these events.
Clark relocates the Suffolk scenes of James's original story to Cornwall, with Prideaux Place near Padstow featuring as Castringham Hall. The scene of the hanging of the witches was filmed at the Cheesewring on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

Edward Petherbridge as Sir Richard/Sir Matthew

Written by Andrew Davies, produced by Rosemary Hill, and directed by the series' creator, Lawrence Gordon Clark, it is based on the ghost story "The Signal-Man" (1866) by Charles Dickens, and first aired on BBC1 on 22 December 1976.
It stars Denholm Elliott as a lone signalman who is visited by a traveller (Bernard Lloyd). The signalman reveals that he is being haunted by a spectre which has appeared at the entrance of the tunnel next to his signal box, and these visions begin to likewise trouble the traveller in his sleep.
The fashion and technology visible suggest that the film is set in the 1900s rather than the 1860s. Production on the play was done exclusively on location on the Severn Valley Railway

Stigma - A Ghost Story for Christmas (1977-ENG SUB)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
Stigma is a short film which is part of the British supernatural anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas. Written by Clive Exton, produced by Rosemary Hill, and directed by the series' creator, Lawrence Gordon Clark, it first aired on BBC1 on 29 December 1975 (delayed from 28 December), the latest airdate in the series relative to Christmas. Audio in English with English subtitles (Click on CC for subtitles.)
The story concerns a family consisting of Katharine (Kate Binchy), Peter (Peter Bowles), and Verity (Maxine Gordon) who move to a rural cottage from the city. Workmen are brought in to try and remove a large stone which is embedded in the grass outside the cottage, but their attempts appear to unleash a supernatural force which causes Katharine to start bleeding from invisible wounds.
"Stigma" is the first instalment in the series not based on a pre-existing work, and the last to be directed by Clark. Hill, who had been brought on as producer in 1973, favoured contemporary stories as opposed to the period adaptations which had been the norm for the series. Clark's ambivalence to this direction led to his departure, and the series' original run would only last another year before ending.
The production was filmed at Avebury, Wiltshire. The production is unlike the previous films in the Ghost Story For Christmas strand in several ways; it is the first to be an original story and the first to be set in the then-present day. Critical opinion is decidedly mixed, with the decision to move away from adaptations of classic ghost stories the main concern. David Kerekes, author of Creeping Flesh: The Horror Fantasy Film Book: Volume 1, suggested that "the problem is that this is not a ghost story. "Stigma" is a straight down the line horror story. Although it's a perfectly competent television production, it just doesn't fit in with the feel of what a Christmas ghost story should be."
Cast & Characters:
Kate Binchy as Katharine
Peter Bowles as Peter
Maxine Gordon as Verity
Jon Laurimore as Dr. Hall
Christopher Blake as Richard

The Ice House - A Ghost Story for Christmas (1978)
Adaneth - Cinema&TV
The Ice House is a short film which is part of the British supernatural anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas, and the final instalment of the original 1971-78 run. Written by John Bowen, who wrote the earlier instalment "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas" (1974), produced by Rosemary Hill, and directed by Derek Lister, it first aired on BBC1 on 25 December 1975, only the second of the films to air on Christmas after "Lost Hearts" (1973).
It stars John Stride as Paul, who has moved to a residential health spa in an old country house following his divorce. A number of disappearances cause him to suspect a strange flower growing near an old ice house and the behaviour of Clovis (Geoffrey Burridge) and Jessica (Elizabeth Romilly), the siblings who run the spa.
Like the previous year's "Stigma", "The Ice House" is an original, contemporary story in contrast with the period ghost story adaptations which had previously been a hallmark of the series. This was at the insistence of Hill, who had taken over as producer in 1973, and the ambivalence of series creator Lawrence Gordon Clark to this direction caused him to leave following "Stigma", making "The Ice House" the only film in the original run not directed by him.
The film is not well regarded, being the last in the series' original run before its cancellation, and barely a "ghost story" at all. Alex Davison, writing an essay for the BFI's 2012 release of the ghost stories states "Although "The Ice House" boasts some eerie scenes, it never quite recaptures the chills of Clark's set pieces" but notes it is "arguably the most daringly experimental film of the A Ghost Story for Christmas series".

John Stride as Paul
Elizabeth Romilly as Jessica
Geoffrey Burridge as Clovis
David Beames as Bob
Gladys Spencer as Diamond Lady
Eirene Beck as Rosetti Lady
