In hindsight, paying attention to providing protection for the elderly from covid, and letting younger people continue to go to work, would have been a reasonable public health decision (as discussed in the video, this option was taken in Sweden by Anders Tegnell). It would have: reduced the number of cancer patients who died due to delay in screening and treatment, reduced mental health and addiction harms due to social isolation, allowed people to retain employment and therefore maintain upkeep of loan repayments and so (at least in New Zealand) to retain possession of their homes.

Even if the proposals from some scientists (and there were many scientists who agreed with this proposal ... https://gbdeclaration.org/) were a poor method for protecting public health, one still has to ask:
- why were experienced medical professionals silenced in a time of uncertainty?
- why advice which was desperately needed, was not even allowed to exist in the public square.

The answer seems clear. Although the government rightly wanted to control the pandemic health strategy, most governments also used emergency powers to prevent and silence public criticism.
