Sigurðarkviða Hin Skamma (The Short Lay of Sigurð) | The Poetic Edda

Sigurð oaths with the sons of Gjuki and marries their sister Guðrun. The three men search out Brynhild to be a wife of one of the brothers; Gunnar and Brynhild marry, but Sigurð falls for her, and her for him. They have an affair, and Gunnar contemplates revenge.

Sigurð is murdered by those with whom he's oathed. The ladies Guðrun and Brynhild mourn the death. Guðrun arranges the funeral of her husband, while Brynhild prepares to sacrifice herself on his pyre.
