There are 4 species of pangolins in Africa and 4 in Asia. They’re also known as scaly anteaters, inhabiting rainforests and grasslands. Although they look like a reptile, they’re actually mammals. The mini-dinosaur looking pangolin has hardened, overlapping, plate-like scales over their whole body. They have short legs, long noses, and sharp claws which they use in digging for insects. The shy pangolin has a very long tongue to capture ants and termites. They’re insectivores with a sharp sense of smell to locate their food. The nocturnal pangolins are agile climbers and capable swimmers. They walk on their back legs and live in ground tunnels or hollow trees. When threatened, the pangolin can curl into a ball, tucking its face under its tail. For added protection, they can emit a noxious-smelling chemical just like a skunk. They’re mostly solitary, meeting only to mate and produce offspring that they nurture for up to 2 years.
