Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is considered the most important German literary figure of modern times. He was a poet, playwright, theatre director, novelist, scientist, critic, artist and statesman. And Elias Howe invented the first practical working sewing machine using the solution shown him in a dream. Elias Howe’s invention is still used in the sewing machine’s design. Before the sewing machine, women made all clothes by hand and each garment was by its very nature unique. The sewing machine liberated women from this work, bringing in the mass production of clothes. It revolutionised the clothing industry, the fashion industry and the way clothes are sold. Without Elias Howe there would be no Nike, no Gap, no Banana Republic, no Calvin Klein, but there again, there would be no sweat shops either.
