Vintner, restaurateur and former Hollywood film producer Reverge Anselmo filed a federal lawsuit against Shasta County Monday over the ongoing battle he's had with the county's resource management department to build a private chapel at his winery east of Redding.
The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court's Eastern District of California, names Shasta County and, specifically, Resource Management Director Russ Mull, as defendants. It seeks unspecified amounts, including injunctive relief and attorneys' fees.
The suit alleges the county is violating both Anselmo's constitutional religious rights and the rights guaranteed to him under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, a federal law partially meant to promote religious freedom by trumping restrictive zoning rules.
