Το λάβαρο ήταν σημαία του ρωμαϊκού στρατού από την εποχή του αυτοκράτορα Μέγα Κωνσταντίνου και μετά.

Όπως μας μεταφέρει ο χριστιανός ιστοριογράφος Λακτάντιος, πριν την μάχη της Μιλβίας γέφυρας το 312 ο Αυτοκράτορας Κωνσταντίνος Α΄ έδωσε διαταγή στους στρατιώτες να βάλουν έναν σταυρό στις ασπίδες τους. Επίσης ο Ευσέβιος γράφει στην επισκόπηση του βίου του Αυτοκράτορα Κωνσταντίνου, ότι ο Κωνσταντίνος Α΄ έδωσε εντολή να φτιάξουν λάβαρο με το μονόγραμμα του Χριστού. Πιστεύεται όμως, ότι τα λάβαρα πρωτοεμφανίστηκαν το 320 στους πολέμους του Ρωμαίου συναυτοκράτορα Λικίνιου. Η ετυμολογία του όρου είναι ανατολίζουσα προρωμαϊκή.

Περιγραφή
Το λάβαρο ήταν χρυσό ακόντιο με πλευρικά προσαρμοσμένη ορθογώνια δοκό, από την οποία κρεμόταν πορφυρό ύφασμα. Στην κορυφή του δόρατος ήταν το χριστιανικό μονόγραμμα (ΧΡ) και τρία αγάλματα: του Αυτοκράτορα και των δύο μεγαλύτερων γιων του.

Η φύλαξη του λαβάρου ήταν επιφορτισμένη σε πενήντα εκ των πλέον ικανών πολεμιστών του στρατού, οι οποίοι και ονομάζονταν λαβάριοι.

The labarum (Greek: λάβαρον) was a vexillum (military standard) that displayed the "Chi-Rho" symbol ☧, a christogram formed from the first two Greek letters of the word "Christ" (Greek: ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ, or Χριστός) — Chi (χ) and Rho (ρ). It was first used by the Roman emperor Constantine the Great.

Ancient sources draw an unambiguous distinction between the two terms "labarum" and "Chi-Rho", even though later usage sometimes regards the two as synonyms. The name labarum was applied both to the original standard used by Constantine the Great and to the many standards produced in imitation of it in the Late Antique world, and subsequently.
