There are 44 species of terns that have have slender bodies, long wings, and forked tails. They live long lives eating fish, insects, and crustaceans. Terns are graceful flyers and excellent hunters. Using their keen eyesight, they dive and plunge into the water to catch their prey. The determined terns are found in countries on every continent, from tropical to polar areas, especially in coastal inland waterways and remote islands.

The Arctic terns have the longest annual migration of any bird. Their navigational skills uses the Earth's magnetic field, the position of the sun, and their sense of smell. They travel from their breeding season in the Arctic Circle to Antarctica and then back again in summer, making an annual round-trip of over 40,000 miles. They migrate offshore and are rarely seen except during breeding season when they nest in large, noisy colonies. After the monogamous tern couple romance each other, they establish their territory, collaborating to build a nest with both parents sharing incubation and feeding responsibilities. Their chicks are fed often, grow quickly, and are ready to fledge in about 1 month.

The adaptable tern symbolizes endurance, resilience, and survival. Call on their spirit to follow your intuition in your life’s path.
