A dead whale (looks like a humpback, best guess) passes gas for the very last time, ejecting all of its rotting internal organs into the sea.

These violent detonations are unique to whales, as the vast majority of decomposing animals can not keep all that built-up gas inside after they've passed away. The gas released is, in fact, methane, which is internally produced via the decomposition of the whale’s internal organs and kept inside by the thickness of the muscle tissue and blubbery skin.

Add to this the fact that the outside of the whale has a tendency to decompose slower than the inside (probably due to the cold water it's sitting in), and you have a recipe for detonation. Since the build-up of gas will eventually reach capacity and find the path of least resistance for escape, the only way to prevent this is to perforate the whale’s skin before it detonates on its own.

Easier said than done in the middle of the ocean.
