Hiatal (Hiatus) Hernia is a gastrointestinal condition involving herniation of part of the stomach through the esophageal hiatus, which is an opening in the diaphragm. A hiatal hernia may occur due to a variety of factors, including obesity, increasing age, and chronic constipation. Due to the herniation of the stomach, the lower esophageal sphincter may open inappropriately, leading to a variety of signs and symptoms of reflux.
