Black Joy (1977)
54
Set in 70's South London, a Guyanese immigrant is exposed to the highs and lows within the local Brixton community.
Although it was meant to be a gritty drama it came off more as a comedy and even inspired the later 70's TV series 'Empire Road', the later 90's cult Channel 4 comedy show series 'Get Up, Stand Up' as well as 'The Desmonds'.
It was entered into the 1977 Cannes Film Festival and the same year Bob Marley released his greatest single, 'Exodus'.
Directed by Anthony Simmons.
Starring Norman Beaton.
