The 1928 Cool Caboose
It once traveled along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which stretched from Chicago to California, with a portion traversing Southeastern Colorado. The railway was established in the latter half of the 1800s, and the caboose still has the red and yellow exterior colors that decorated the trains traveling this route. It also has the railroad's logo painted on the side.
The railroad that this car traveled was once one of the largest in the country. It was even memorialized in a popular song, “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe.” Judy Garland sang the song in “The Harvey Girls” film. The railroad was often traveled by passengers, especially in the 1900s, and contributed to many advancements, like being one of the first to add dining cars to passenger trains.
