“After 30 years of marriage, I have learned some of the highest praise I can expect from my wife is “ya”. That’s it. Not deep in-depth evaluation and feedback causing deep reflection and life choice reevaluation. Not the kind of responsive, thoughtful, endearing and emotionally invigorating WOO HOO one might long for. Just YA. If I made the mistake of measuring the enthusiasm of her response against others, it could be fatal to my success. Simultaneously, if I accepted every exuberant and exhilarating praise of every commentary about my work, my ideas, my methods as the truth, I might find myself living in a false reality and self adulation. As a leader, as a communicator, please measure the feedback against the qualifications and persona of the critic as well as the validity of the critique. Don’t believe your own press releases or public relations as the most accurate evaluation either. Seek out people who care enough to tell you the truth and know enough to make you better.”
