Jane Asher Ginger Girl, The Asher Family (West London)

57 Wimpole Street in London is the former residence where Paul McCartney of The Beatles lived during the height of “Beatlemania” in 1964–66. He stayed there while in a relationship with Jane Asher, who was part of the affluent Asher family. The house was bought by the Asher family in 1957 when they moved from a flat in Great Portland Street. Dr. Richard Asher, an eminent doctor specializing in mental health, and his wife Margaret, who was a professor of music at Guildhall School of Music, lived there. Their children included Claire and Jane, both actresses, and their son Peter, a singer.

Interestingly, Paul McCartney composed many of The Beatles’ renowned songs during his stay at 57 Wimpole Street. The debut American number one hit, “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” and the iconic “Yesterday” were both created within those walls. The latter song has been covered more times than any other in the history of recorded music.

The quietness of Wimpole Street was briefly interrupted in 1962 when gunshots rang out in nearby Wimpole Mews. The house at 17 Wimpole Mews was the home of Dr. Stephen Ward, a society osteopath. The ensuing events led to the uncovering of the infamous Profumo Affair, which had significant political consequences. Number 57 Wimpole Street is now a private clinic, but its musical and historical significance remains.
