I'm Cancelling Matt Walsh
In a recent video by Matt Walsh, he discusses his belief that men should not express any emotion whatsoever. This perspective raised several questions and concerns for me. It seems Walsh envisions men as emotionally stunted beings, devoid of the ability to express their feelings, almost like robots. This rigid stance makes me wonder if he understands the importance of emotional expression or if he is too emotionally detached to see its value.
Walsh has four sons and two daughters, and I genuinely hope his sons don't adopt such an emotionally restrictive viewpoint. According to Walsh, men don't need to be emotional at all, and while I skipped the first few minutes of his video to keep my response engaging, the full video is available on his YouTube channel for anyone interested. Walsh's friends, who seemingly share his viewpoint, should realize that not all men adhere to this emotional suppression. What Walsh implies is that men should be emotionless robots, which seems to suggest that the sole purpose of men is to be stoic and unfeeling. This perspective is highly problematic, as it doesn't align with the reality that men, like all human beings, have a range of emotions.
Just because Walsh's personal experiences have led him to these conclusions doesn't mean they apply universally. He needs to separate his circumstances from broader societal norms. The idea that men expressing emotions is somehow a crime or a sign of weakness is absurd. Walsh appears to be trolling to tarnish the reputation of men who are more emotionally expressive. Men's duty, according to Walsh, is to remain emotionally stunted. However, who would want friends who can't express any emotion? Maybe robots, but not human beings. Walsh seems emotionally deficient compared to the men he criticizes, who at least display human emotions. Emotions are fundamental to being human, just like eating or using the bathroom. Walsh's assertion that to be a "real man," one must be a robot or a statue, excludes the vast majority of men who naturally express their feelings in various ways.
Are men and women supposed to act oppositely in every aspect? Just because there are differences doesn't mean men and women can't share similar emotional expressions. Some men are more expressive, and some women are less so. Emotions don't make men any less manly, nor do they make women overly emotional. Walsh's generalization that men who express emotions make wrong choices is flawed. Reacting differently doesn't mean living in constant fear of showing weakness. His stance disregards the reality that emotional expression is a human trait, not confined to gender.
The notion that emotional expression is a feminine trait is a gross generalization. Walsh's personal anecdotes shouldn't dictate how every man or woman behaves. Such a narrow perspective shows that Walsh might be living in a bubble, detached from the reality of diverse human experiences. His video perpetuates harmful stereotypes, suggesting that any deviation from his emotionally repressive standard is a sign of weakness or femininity. I hope his children, especially his daughters, recognize that his views are not universal truths. When they grow older, they should understand that expressing emotions is not a sign of weakness but a natural human quality.
In conclusion, Walsh's rigid stance on emotional expression in men is deeply flawed and harmful. Men and women both can express emotions and doing so is a fundamental aspect of being human. Emotional expression should not be suppressed, as it is crucial for mental and emotional well-being. I hope Walsh's children learn to value and express their emotions, breaking free from the emotionally repressive mindset he advocates.
