Socrates, tell how, returning from the battle, he encounters Chaerephon, who leads him to Critias, a political figure. Socrates questions how philosophy has been in its absence, and inquires about wisdom and beauty in youth. He meet Chamides, a handsome youth, and the dialogue on what is temperance ensues. No formal conclusion is reach, but many aspects are considered. It opened at the Palaestra, wrestling school of Taureas, which is near the Porch of the King Archon.
