The Fancy ZX Spectrum 2 128KB, made in Taiwan, is a cherished piece of retro computing history. Released during the late 1980s, this 8-bit computer stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of the ZX Spectrum brand, which captivated a generation of gamers and computer enthusiasts. As a refurbished model, it has found a new lease on life among collectors and retro gaming fans who appreciate its blend of nostalgia, functionality, and the technical ingenuity that characterized 8-bit computing.
The Legacy of ZX Spectrum
The ZX Spectrum 2 128KB was part of the broader ZX Spectrum series, a line of home computers that revolutionized the tech industry in the UK and beyond. The original ZX Spectrum was developed by Sinclair Research, founded by Sir Clive Sinclair, and first released in 1982. It quickly became one of the most popular home computers in the UK, thanks to its affordability and a vast library of games and software.
As the ZX Spectrum brand evolved, Amstrad acquired the Sinclair computer business in 1986, and the ZX Spectrum 2 128KB was one of the models that benefited from this transition. This particular model was manufactured in Taiwan, a hub for electronics production in the 1980s, known for its quality and efficiency.
Features and Design
The ZX Spectrum 2 128KB was an evolution of the earlier ZX Spectrum 128, featuring a similar design but with several enhancements. The 128KB of RAM was a significant upgrade from the original 48KB model, allowing for more complex games and applications to be run on the machine. The added memory meant that developers could create richer, more immersive experiences, which was a key selling point for the Spectrum 2.
One of the standout features of the Spectrum 2 128KB was its built-in tape recorder, which made loading software and games much more convenient. This feature was particularly appealing to users who were accustomed to the slower, more cumbersome process of using external tape recorders with earlier models. The machine also came with a full-size keyboard, which was a welcome improvement over the rubber-keyed design of the original ZX Spectrum, offering a more tactile and responsive typing experience.
The design of the Spectrum 2 128KB was sleek and modern for its time, with a compact form factor that made it easy to integrate into home setups. The unit was typically coloured in a distinctive grey, with red and blue function keys that added a touch of flair to the machine’s appearance. The built-in sound chip, the AY-3-8912, delivered superior audio capabilities, which was a boon for gamers and programmers alike.
Refurbishment and Modern Appeal
As with many vintage computers, the ZX Spectrum 2 128KB has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to the retro computing movement. Refurbished models, particularly those made in Taiwan, are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who value the craftsmanship and reliability of these machines. Refurbishment typically involves replacing or repairing key components, such as the power supply, keyboard membrane, and capacitors, ensuring that the machine operates as smoothly as it did when it was first released.
These refurbished units are not only functional but also serve as a bridge to the past, allowing a new generation to experience the joys of 8-bit computing. Whether used for gaming, programming, or simply as a display piece, the Spectrum 2 128KB continues to inspire admiration and respect from those who understand its significance in the history of personal computing.
Impact on Retro Gaming
The ZX Spectrum 2 128KB played a pivotal role in the golden age of 8-bit gaming. The machine was home to a vast array of classic games, many of which pushed the boundaries of what was possible on an 8-bit platform. Titles such as "Manic Miner," "Jet Set Willy," and "R-Type" were immensely popular, showcasing the creative potential of game developers who worked within the constraints of the hardware.
The machine’s 128KB of memory allowed for more complex games, with better graphics, sound, and gameplay mechanics than those available on earlier models. This made the Spectrum 2 a favourite among serious gamers, as well as hobbyist programmers who used the machine to learn to code and develop their own games.
In the context of retro gaming, the ZX Spectrum 2 128KB is a cherished relic, representing a time when gaming was in its formative years, and innovation was driven by passion and creativity. The machine’s ability to run classic games with ease has made it a cornerstone of any serious retro gaming collection.
Conclusion
The Fancy ZX Spectrum 2 128KB, made in Taiwan, is more than just a computer; it is a symbol of a bygone era of innovation and creativity. Released in the late 1980s, this 8-bit machine was a critical part of the ZX Spectrum legacy, offering enhanced features, superior design, and a platform for some of the most memorable games of the time. As a refurbished model, it continues to captivate the imagination of retro computing enthusiasts, ensuring that the legacy of the ZX Spectrum lives on for future generations to enjoy.
Many hours of soldering, trying & testing and modifying to improve to get the best possible outcome. Still thinking of trying the AD 722 module instead of Tea 2000. I tried the 1uH +82 uF to get 4.43Mhz (variable cap and inductance) it removed the ghosting but I was not satisfied with the quality of fonts that became blurry.
