Imperfect Biblical Figures DESTINED for Perfect Purposes

The actions or choices made by various biblical figures can often be criticized, analyzed or judged. Figures like:

Rebekah ensuring that Jacob received the firstborn blessing from Isaac... and Jacob for going along with it.

Judah sleeping with a woman who he believed was a prostitute but was really Tamar.

Moses killing the Egyptian to intercede for the Hebrew and later in life, striking the rock without honoring God as Holy.

David committing adultery and orchestrating the death of Uriah.

Solomon marrying many foreign women against the command of God.

Judas betraying Jesus.

Peter denying Jesus three times.

The people of the Bible were not perfect people, just as none of us are perfect people. They may not have always made the best choices, but God knew their natural tendencies before they were even born. We read in ‭Psalms 139:13 and 16,

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb....Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."

And we read in ‭Jeremiah 1:4-5,

"The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”

God chose each individual according to His will to fulfill His purpose. He made good use of their strengths as well as their weaknesses and always turned all things for the good as we read in ‭
Romans 8:28,

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

All of these key biblical figures, and others, were called and placed in position according to God's purpose. We see this truth clearly in the book of Esther when Mordecai urges Esther to beg the king for mercy and plead for her people. He tells her in Esther 4:14,

‭"who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

And we see in the life of Joseph how his brothers were so jealous of him that they threw him down a well. It would be easy to criticize his brothers for their actions, but later in life, Joseph tells his brothers in Genesis 50:20,

‭"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."

If we step back and look at the big picture of God's word from Genesis to Revelation, we see that it all points to and leads to Jesus. Each person's life and path was a chess piece put in place to prepare the way to the birth, ministry, sacrificial death and resurrection of our Savior.

Let us remember that big picture and be thankful for the imperfect people of the bible and thankful for God's perfect purpose for each of them as He paved the way to bring salvation to the world.
