DR IAN MCDERMOTT

Ian McDermott is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Central London, and he specialises in knee problems.

Ian left the NHS over 10 years ago, as he wasn’t prepared to compromise on the quality of patient care that he was allowed to deliver, and because he felt that it was an unsafe environment to practice in, and he now works in full-time private practice.

Ian has strong ongoing academic interests, having published widely in his field, and Ian is recognised as one of the leading figures in the UK in the field of meniscal repair and meniscal transplantation, as well as in the field of custom-made knee replacement surgery. As well as being an Honorary Professor Associate, Ian is also on the Editorial Board of two major orthopaedic journals.

Ian has also always been heavily involved in medical politics. Ian was the President of the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association, and he then ended up becoming the youngest ever surgeon to be elected as a Council Member and Trustee of The Royal College of Surgeons. Currently, Ian is the Co-Vice Chairman of The Federation of Independent Practitioners Organisations.

Finally, Ian would like to describe himself as ‘awake’, and as having an almost pathological hatred of bullshit and of bullshitters.
