Beyond the Game: A discussion with Stephen A. Smith, Mark Shapiro, and Caitlin Clark…

Iowa women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith and UI alum Mark Shapiro took center stage on Friday night as part of the university’s homecoming festivities.

SEPTEMBER 2023

Thousands of people packed onto the Pentacrest to see Clark and Smith, with families migrating from the homecoming parade, where Clark was a grand marshal, and students packing in to see the basketball star.

Smith is one of the faces of ESPN and is heavily associated with basketball, hosting the long-running “First Take,” his own podcast. Shapiro graduated from the University of Iowa in the 1990s and has spent time high in the ranks at ESPN and as CEO of Six Flags.

In a 20-minute chat outside the Old Capitol Building on a windy, chilly night, the trio discussed Clark’s role as the face of women’s sports, her time at the university and what it means to play for the Hawkeyes, whether she thinks she is the best in college basketball right now, and more.
