Why COULDN'T You Have Been a Loyalist?

During the period of the American Revolution, why couldn't you have just been a loyalist? Why not just be a part of the empire on which the Sun never set? This may seem like an irrelevant question, but the answer to this question is the same as the answer to the question of: why not just join with the establishment today? The answer for both questions is simply one of morality. In order to join with the establishment today, you must be okay with one million Iraqi civilians being killed in the famine following U.S. sanctions. You must be okay with Ukrainians being kidnapped off of the streets to be thrust onto the front lines in order to degrade the Russian military.
