Index Expurgatorious: How the Pope Alters Books & Changes History
R.W. Thompson tells us about this index, as he quotes from the book History of the Inquisition by the Rev. Father Paul Servita (1552-1623). Also known as Paulo Sarpi, this Roman Catholic prelate and canon lawyer was extremely critical of medieval scholasticism and many papal traditions. Sarpi was in favor of republican liberties, such as freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and a free press, and he was also a champion of separation of church and state. Some thought him to to be a crypto-Protestant. Sarpi would survive several assassination attempts from other Roman Catholics, being stabbed 3 times in one attack. Instead of being imprisoned, his attackers were given protection and a pension by the viceroy of Naples for their effort to eliminate opposition to the Papacy. Sarpi's major work was The History of the Council of Trent (published in 1619). With that being said, the following quote from Thompson elaborates on the Index Expurgatorious:
