CONSERVATIVE GROUP MAD OVER U.S. CITY ISSUING REPARATIONS

A US city is the first to take a step toward addressing historical injustices against Black people.

Evanston in Illinois has already paid 193 Black residents $25,000 each as reparations out of $20 million set aside to redress discriminatory policies in housing enacted for 50 years during the 20th century.

However, a conservative group, Judicial Watch, has sued the city, accusing it of providing reparations without proof of housing discrimination. If the case reaches as high as the US Supreme Court, Evanston may face a tough battle, as it ruled in 2023 against race-based affirmative action in college admissions.

The question also remains of how far $25,000 in reparations goes to redress centuries of African enslavement and generations of post-slavery subjugation. For example, the average house in Evanston goes for $424,885.
