Up until the half of the 20th century, deploying female soldiers onto the battlefield was something that military powers did not rely on. The bloody task of fighting and advancing on enemy lines was left to the males to carry out.
However, during the battles between Germany and the Soviet Union, the Russians needed all the power they could get to withstand the push of the Germans. So, they deployed thousands of women onto the battlefield as Forward Operations Units. But what exactly happened to these battle-hardened women?
When on June 22, 1941, the German army began Operation Barbarossa, their invasion of the Soviet Union, they were confronted with a unique situation not seen in their previous battles in Poland, France, or the Low Countries: the presence of female enemy combatants.
The war on the Eastern Front was a clash of ideologies, with German National Socialism on one side and Soviet Communism on the other.
The animosity between the two sides was much more intense than the conflicts between the Germans and the Brits or French troops in the West. The Nazi propaganda actively portrayed the Soviet population as inferior Slavic sub-humans, leading to widespread cruelty and suffering. People like them were thought to be critical of their military and their government, having a mostly male-dominated hierarchy. The Germans were soon about to learn that this indeed wasn’t the case.
