Making Rapé with Huni Kuin Shaman

A few weeks ago I had the honor of attending a hape making circle with a paje, the Huni Kuin name for shaman. Hape is a tobacco snuff made from nicotania rustica, a super potent variety of tobacco, ashes from several different tree species, and various medicinal plants. There are hundreds of recipes, all with different applications, from healing to divination.

After hundreds, if not thousands, of years of secrecy, the Huni Kuin have decided to break their silence and share the secrets of this medicine with the outside world. In this video, the paje shares the history of hape, and the bascis of preparation. It is an honor to present this important moment with all of you.
