Citizens Accuse Wisconsin Elections Commission of Rigging Vote on Robin Vos Recall Petition

On June 27, 2024, the Wisconsin Elections Commission convened for their quarterly meeting to address the Recall Petition regarding Assembly Representative Robin Vos. The citizens of Assembly District 63 had initiated a recall petition against Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, prompting the WEC staff to recommend its approval due to the sufficient number of signatures gathered. However, in a surprising turn of events, the Wisconsin Election Commission ultimately voted 4-2 against advancing the recall petition.

The commission justified their decision by pointing out that the signatures were collected on a Sunday and a holiday, which resulted in the submission falling below the required threshold of signatures when turned in on the next business day. According to the law, deadlines that fall on weekends or holidays automatically extend to the next business day. Accusations of a rigged commission began to surface, with calls for the removal of the commissioner’s gaining traction among the recall supporters and concerned citizens. The notion of an unelected commission can determine law to fit the needs of Speaker Vos and usurp the will of the voters, we no longer have a government "of by and for the people."
